Two New Programs Added at Alpha House of Tampa – GEMS & DIVAS
This year Project Promise a program with the Hillsborough County School System have provided us with two programs (GEMS and DIVA’S) who are working with our teens in a group format to address many of the challenging issues facing teens who have experienced abuse and neglect, teen parenting, and/or are in the foster care system. Project Promise’s program goals are to offer services focused on mentoring, intervention services and educational support. (Promise = Programs Offering Mentoring, Intervention Services, and Educational support).
The “GEMS” program began weekly class sessions at Alpha House through our Alpha House Academy during January 2014 with a focus on promoting positive self-expression, constructive use of time, and increasing social skills.
Girls Empowered Mentally for Success (GEMS) is a nonprofit organization established in 2003 by Crystal Bailes. It is dedicated to positively impacting the lives of girls through the provision of gender-specific youth development programming. In addition to its youth development groups, GEMS host’s teen advocacy groups, community service projects, and special community events. These classes have been welcomed and well attended by our teens. The gender-specific programming uses a research based curriculum focused on predetermined themes, related activities, and culmination events to measure outcomes. Core curriculums are designed to address the unique needs of target population and to empower the girls participating to reach their highest levels of achievement.
Also beginning in January 2013, the DIVA’s program is offering another popular empowerment group that is working with our teen population at Alpha House of Tampa. DIVA’s (Devine Individuals with Virtuous Attitudes) provides enrichment, tutoring and mentoring programing for girls 6-16 years of age.
