On Friday, May 10, 2013 Alpha House of Tampa was thrilled to celebrate the Open House and Ribbon-Cutting of the new Alpha House of Tampa’s Parents As Teachers Center. Thanks to the generous support of The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and Mary Alphonse Bradley Fund, talents of Cynthia Keenan of CK Designs and Scott Scherschel of Interior Spaces, we have expanded our Parents As Teachers program and to offer even more exceptional services for the mothers and babies at Alpha House of Tampa.

Heather’s Community Baby Shower!

On April 9, 2013, Heather VanNest of Channel 10 News hosted a community baby shower for both Alpha House of Tampa and Alpha House of Pinellas. We were delighted to be invited to participate in this wonderful event with several community supporters. We shared donations such as: high chairs, car seats, diapers, baby products, and more. Our volunteers were excited to welcome donors and extend gratitude for their wonderful gifts. Thank you Heather and congratulations to you and your family!

The mothers at Alpha House of Tampa have the same hopes and dreams as other moms, just bigger challenges in achieving them. They like to eat at Olive Garden and shop at the mall. Their babies like “Toy Story” and peek-a-boo. They love their babies. They want to succeed.

They are homeless or they are teen moms in foster care. They have experienced some form of trauma or abuse in the past. More than half do not have a high school diploma. Some are in recovery programs for substance abuse. They haven’t been to the doctor or the dentist.

They need your help. Please give now.

After 31 years serving the community, Alpha House of Tampa remains the only licensed maternity home in Hillsborough County. Your financial support ensures that Alpha House of Tampa will be here to offer safe housing and the tools our residents need to become self-sufficient and effective, responsible parents.

Volunteer Positions

1) Adopt a Family (a mother and 1-2 children) – $175-$250
We will provide you with a family’s wish list with their gift preferences. We ask that you purchase items from the mom’s list within a total budget of $100. We ask that you purchase a small gift (under $25) from each child’s list AND provide $50 in WalMart gift cards for each child so that the child’s mother can shop for the child herself, perhaps for the first time ever.
*Please deliver gifts UNWRAPPED to: Rosalie Center at Alpha House (201 S. Tampania Ave) by December 72) Adopt a Mom – $100
We will provide you with a mom’s wish list with her gift preferences. We ask that you purchase items from the mom’s list within a total budget of $100.

5) Host a holiday activity with your office, church or civic group
We are happy to provide suggestions and schedule volunteer activities during the month of December like baking holiday cookies, making ornaments for the tree, or hosting an outing to a holiday movie. Extra volunteers for babysitting during these activities is always helpful.6) Volunteer to serve on the Alpha Angels Committee.
We couldn’t celebrate the holidays without our Alpha Angels volunteers. We need losts of “elves” to help with shopping, event planning, gift-wrapping and a host of other tasks.

Alpha House’s Domestic Violence Vigil

Channel 10/CBS story was at the 3^rd Annual ALPHA HOUSE OF TAMPA Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil and Speak-Out October 24th on the green at Alpha House. In December of 2004, featured guest speaker Patty Parra-Perez Andrews was shot in the head by her ex-husband, who then shot and killed both of their children, chasing their 13-year-old daughter down the street to do so, and then killed himself. Only Patty survived. She now speaks out against domestic violence in an effort to save the lives of others at risk of or experiencing domestic violence. We are grateful to Patty for sharing her powerful message with our residents and all those affected by domestic violence in our community.

Thanks also to Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandy Murman for joining in the vigil. We are grateful for her leadership and commitment on this issue and others affecting the homeless, pregnant and parenting mothers and babies we serve.
